The Controller owns accurate, timely, and defensible books for Mission Mountain Holdings and The Hi-Line Company. The role produces a reconciled monthly close for both entities, keeps point-of-sale, Metrc, and general ledger records in agreement, administersclient  billing under the Administrative Services Agreement, and gives the outside CPA what it needs to file correct returns, including the Section 280E analysis.

You will lead a small team and work directly with the CEO and our outside CPA.

Essential functions

Close and reporting

  • Run the monthly close for company and client companies; deliver a reporting package — balance sheet, P&L by facility, cash, and key variances — to the CEO by business day ten.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts, class and location tracking, and accrual schedules.
  • Prepare account reconciliations for every balance-sheet account monthly, with review evidence.

Retail, inventory, and cost accounting

  • Reconcile daily sales, cash, card settlements, and safe balances for every store; investigate and escalate shortages.
  • Reconcile point-of-sale sales and inventory to Metrc and to the general ledger monthly; escalate compliance-relevant variances the same day they are found.
  • Account for R inventory and cost per unit; value inventory at period end; record intercompany transfers and wholesale sales.

Intercompany and MSA

  • Calculate and issue monthly Administrative Services  management-fee and payroll-reimbursement invoices from MMH to Hi-Line in accordance with the written agreement.
  • Reconcile due-to and due-from balances monthly to zero unexplained difference; document every reconciling item.
  • Maintain records supporting third-party relationship and financial-interest disclosures required by the Montana Cannabis Control Division.

Tax, payroll, and compliance

  • Prepare and file quarterly Montana marijuana tax returns for adult-use and medical operations and any local-option returns.
  • Oversee payroll processed in Gusto: approvals, journal entries, allocations to entities and locations, and payroll tax filings.
  • Prepare the year-end tax package, including 280E cost classification support, for the outside CPA; support any review, audit, or regulatory request.

Cash, controls, and growth

  • Maintain a rolling thirteen-week cash forecast for each entity; manage vendor payment runs within approved limits.
  • Design and enforce cash-handling, deposit, and segregation-of-duties controls.
  • Support financial diligence on acquisitions; set up opening balances and convert client books to MMH accounting standards within ninety days.
  • Lead, train, and evaluate the accounting team; manage the outside CPA relationship.
